Character's Name
Angela Vicario
Role in Plot
Angela is one of the main characters, and is in many ways the cause of the majority of plot events. She is the fiance of Bayardo San Roman, who is found to not be a virgin on her wedding night and is thrown out. She provides some mystery to the novel - it is never known or revealed who the true perpetrator of taking her virginity was, or even if Santiago, the man she blamed, was truly at fault. It is also an enigma as to why she becomes obsessed with Bayardo after leaving town, and also intially disliking him. Only Angela can know the answers to these questions. Without her, her brothers would never have killed/had to kill Santiago.
Significance of Name in Work
Angela: means "heavenly messenger" or "angelic". Vicario: is Spanish for Vicar (Spanish surnames take on the person's occupation; therefore someone in her family line is a vicar). It is ironic that someone with names that dictate such purity should be chiefly characterised in the novel by her purity. Not only is she sexually impure (by her community's standards), she may also be morally impure for having a (most likely) innocent man killed.
